The Rev. Roger Nelson Cheney, 71, died Dec. 30, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was born May 13, 1931, in Willimantic, Conn., the son of Clark and Dorothy (Foster) Cheney.

He earned a bachelor's degree at Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, W.Va., and a bachelor's degree at Hartford Seminary in Hartford, Conn. He was ordained as a pastor in 1956.

The Rev. Cheney served as pastor of various congregations of the United Church of Christ in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont and Pennsylvania, for a total of 40 years. He also served as a fire department chaplain in South Boston and Torringford, Conn.

He married Nancy Rovero; that marriage ended in divorce. He married Doris Wooldridge in 1977 in Windsor.

He was a member of the Rotary Club in Windsor and Slatington, Pa., and a longtime member of the Fellowship Lodge AF and AM in Bridgewater, Mass.

The Rev. Cheney enjoyed hunting, fishing and reading.

Survivors include his wife of Wallingford; three sons, Stephen Cheney, Scott Cheney and Todd Cheney; a daughter, Ellen Freidler; a brother, Adrian Cheney of Malone, N.Y.; five grandchildren and one great - grandson.

The memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Old South Congregational Church in Windsor with the Rev. Amanda Lape Freeberg, pastor, officiating. Burial will take place at a later date. A reception will follow the service at the church.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor.
