Chelsea Thompson was born at Danbury, Iowa, on October 22, 1890. He was the son of Charles Thompson and Margaret Grafford. When Chelsea was young the family lived for a time in the Sioux City, Iowa, area, before moving to northeast Nebraska.

On February 19, 1917, Chelsea was married to Kathryn Ahern at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wayne, Nebraska. They made their home on a farm north of Carroll, Nebraska until 1926, when they left the farm and moved to Wayne. After living there for about 20 years they went to live in Sioux City, Iowa. Chelsea and Kathryn had a family of eight children, five boys and three girls. Another daughter died at birth in 1934.

On February 4, 1955, Chelsea died at his home in Sioux City. Funeral services were held in Sioux City, with burial at Calvary Cemetery there. Chelsea was survived by his wife; four sons, Charles, James, Leo and Gene; three daughters, Betty, Kathryn (DeNike) and Marjorie (Markert); and seven grandchildren. Also, two brothers, Worth and Theodore; and two sisters, Mrs. James Smith and Mrs. Gilbert Dahl. He was preceded in death by his son John, who died while serving in the U.S. Navy in World War II, and the daughter who died in 1934.
