Ball, Marion Helen

Marion Helen Slater Ball, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died at age 91 on Friday, December 26, 2014, at Oak Hill Manor in Ithaca. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Donald Clayton Ball, and son, Douglas M. Ball. She is survived by a daughter, Judith Alexander of Holbrook, NY; two sons, Donald Ball of Fairfax, VA, and David Ball of West End, NC; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Marion was the daughter of Alexander Charles Slater and Esther Gustava Thalhofer Slater of Endicott, NY. She married her husband Donald on October 25, 1945, after his service in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. Demonstrating her devotion, she had previously given him a silver identification bracelet to wear, inscribed with his name and serial number and the words, "This Marine Belongs to Marion Helen Slater." Marion worked at several jobs over the years. Following her graduation from high school, she worked at Grange League Federation (GLF) and then Agway, and then at Cornell University's Modern Languages and Linguistics Department until her retirement in 1988. After her retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her husband and following the New York Yankees. A woman of keen intelligence and integrity, Marion will continue to be in the hearts, minds and prayers of her family and loved ones. A graveside ceremony at Frear Cemetery will be held in the spring at a date to be determined.
