Anse Baker was the son of "Baldy George" Baker and the brother of Thomas Baker (nicknamed after death as "Bad Tom"). Anse, his father and most of his brothers were directly involved in the infamous Baker-Howard Feud in the late 1890's and early 1900's.

In 1898 Anse was a member of Company D of the 1st Kentucky Infantry. He enlisted in early June and by the 10th of August The 1st Kentucky arrived in Puerto Rico towards the end of the Spanish American. The unit did not see combat but remained as an occupation force until December 1898. Anse mustered out of the 1st Kentucky on February 24, 1899. The 1st lost a total of 28 men during its 8 months of service. 27 from disease and 1 by accidental death.
