Floyd was raised at Deposit where his father was a furniture maker and undertaker. He was the son of Robert Brown and Emma Andrews Brown. He graduated from Deposit Union School at Deposit in 1902 and from Harvard University at Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1906. From 1906 to 1909, he was employed as a chemist at Mansfield, Massachusetts. From 1909 to 1912, he was superintendent of a varnish works at Cleveland, Ohio. From 1912 to 1914 he was superintendent of a varnish factory at Long Island City, New York. Floyd married to Lucy Elizabeth Cumming on 5 December 1907 at Deposit. They made their home first at Cleveland and then at Long Island City before returning to Deposit in 1914. They purchased a home on Third Street and he was associated with his father in the retail furniture and undertaking business. Floyd and Lucy were the parents of three children; Elizabeth Cumming Brown, Eleanor Andrews Brown, and David More Brown.
