Francis James Ahern was born at Carroll, Nebraska, on October 24, 1918. He was the first child born to John Ahern and Mary Lillian Duffy. When Francis was still an infant, the Aherns moved from Nebraska to a farm near Madelia, Minnesota. He spent his youth there, graduating from Madelia High School in 1936.

On November 12, 1947, Francis was married to Erna Janzen at Darfur, Minnesota. They had one child. Francis was a self-employed carpenter and painter. He and Erna lived for several years at New Ulm and then moved to Mankato, Minnesota, in 1953. Erna died at their home in Mankato in 1986. On October 31, 1992, Francis married Monica Dauffenbach at North Mankato.

Francis died at the Mankato Lutheran Home on October 2, 2001. Funeral services were held at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Mankato on October 5. Burial was at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery near Darfur.

Francis was survived by his second wife, his son, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John and Lawrence.
