Born July 21, 1931 in Teachey, NC, he was the seventh child of the late Johnny Harrison and Lila Williams Sr. He was also predeceased by his wife, Lottie Melissia Murphy Williams, and four siblings, Zula Mae Reed, Leona Gertrude Roulette, Janie Pauline Johnson and Dorothy Louise Lowe.
Mr. Williams was a graduate of Charity High School and a US Army Veteran having served in the Korean Conflict. After returning home from the Army, Mr. Williams attended North Carolina A&T University where he received a B.S. in Science and a Masters in Biology. He later received a Certification in Administration and Supervision at East Carolina University and later attended Wake Forest University where he emphasized on Asian Studies.
Mr. Williams was employed by The Duplin County School System for more than 30 years where he served as Teacher, Vice-Principal of Rose Hill-Magnolia School, Principal of North Duplin Junior High, Principal of North Duplin High School and General Supervisor for grades 9 thru 12, a position that he held at the Board of Education for the last 9 years of his service to the school system. He also served under the leadership of former Superintendent, L.S. Guy while at the Central Office.
Mr. Williams was a faithful member of Rockfish AME Church where he served in many capacities. He believed in hard work and serving his community where he demonstrated his commitment by his involvement with many local organizations.
Survivors include two sons, Johnny Harrison Williams III and wife Patricia and Patrick Murphy Williams and wife Valerie all of Teachey, NC, two brothers, James Clarence Williams of Rose Hill and Leroy Williams and wife Doretha of Bloomfield, MI, two sisters-in-law, Ethel Murphy Wright of Washington, DC and Irene Pridgen of Atantic City, NJ; two brothers-in-law, George Murphy and wife Van of Fort Washington, MD and Carl Murphy of Ivanhoe, NC, five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a devoted friend, Esther Steele, many nieces, nephews, extended relatives and many other friends.
The funeral, conducted by the Reverend Arthur R. Jenkins, was held on Thursday, January 8, 2015, 11:00 a.m. at Rockfish AME Church, 167 Cornwallis Road, Teachey, NC. Burial followed in the church Cemetery.
A visitation for relatives and friends was held on Wednesday, January 7, 2015, 6:00-7:00 p.m. at Dunn Funeral Home in Burgaw, NC.
