The energetic 5-foot-6, 155-pound third baseman-second baseman played 13 years in the major leagues with the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1922 to 1925, the Boston Braves from 1925 to 1927, the St. Louis Cardinals from 1928 to 1931, the Cincinnati Reds from 1932 to 1933 and the Philadelphia Phillies in 1934. The left-handed hitter batted .283 with 27 doubles in 153 games as a rookie. After hitting .270 in 123 games in 1923, he batted a career-high .328 with 26 doubles in 144 games in 1924. That year he also had career highs in triples with 13 and runs scored with 98. When he got off to a .200 start in 44 games, he was sold to the Braves on July 25, 1925. He wound up hitting .257 for the season, then hit .296 in 130 games in 1926 and .302 in 113 games in 1927. He was sent with $25,000 to the Cardinals on March 25, 1928 for third baseman Les Bell. For the Redbirds, High hit .286 in 111 games in 1928, .295 in 146 games in 1929, .279 in 72 games in 1930 and .267 in 63 games in 1931. He batted . 294 (5 for 17) in the 1928 World Series, but the New York Yankees pulled a four-game sweep. He went 1 for 2 in Game 6 of the 1930 Fall Classic, but the Philadelphia Athletics won in six. As the leadoff batter, he was 3 for 4 with two runs scored in Game 7 of the 1931 World Series as the Cardinals beat the A's 4-2 for the title. Overall, he hit .267 (4 for 15) in that series. He was traded to the Reds on December 2, 1931 for outfielder Nick Cullop and cash. He hit .284 lifetime with 195 doubles, 65 triples, 44 homers and 482 runs batted in. His brother Charles played outfield for the A's from 1919 to 1920 and another brother, Hugh, was an outfielder for the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees from 1913 to 1918.
