Howard H. Hoover, 90, of Charlestown died Friday, Jan. 2, 2015 at the Cleveland Clinic following a brief illness. A life-long resident of Portage County, he was born on June 21, 1924, in Ravenna, Ohio, to the late Eugene Sr. and Jessie (Pittman) Hoover. Survivors include his wife of 68 years Sara (Hartman) Hoover, daughters Janet (Rick) Burt and Ruth Ann Bartholomew, grandchildren Tracy (Kelly) Burt, Erin (Joe) Ruggles and Eric (Kristen) Burt, great grandchildren Sophie and Duke Ruggles, sister Jessie Horning, brothers Jack and Glenn, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Eugene Jr., son-in-law Daniel Bartholomew and sister-in-law Carole Hoover.

Howard retired from Parker Hannifin where he was an electrician and worked in maintenance. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, during which time he was sent to Africa, Italy, France and Germany. Howard was a longtime member of Charlestown United Methodist Church where he served as a trustee, took pride in helping maintain the facilities and, along with his wife, greeted churchgoers with an ornery smile as they entered Sunday service. He was also a charter member of the Charlestown Volunteer Fire Department, delivered Meals on Wheels and worked at the County Clothing Center. Howard enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden, which he was always willing to share with friends and family, and was known for being eco-friendly before it was trendy, picking up cans along the road and saving every last piece of aluminum foil to recycle. He was known as quite the conversationalist and loved to talk about his army adventures, the latest technology and giving advice for whatever project you might have been working on around the house. He also loved to tell you to turn off the lights as you left the room.

Calling hours will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015 at Charlestown United Methodist Church, 6408 Rock Spring Road, Ravenna, Ohio and 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015, with a memorial service to follow at 1 p.m., with Reverend Greg Hogan officiating. Burial will take place in Charlestown Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials to the Charlestown United Methodist Church Building Fund, 6408 Rock Spring Road, Ravenna, OH 44266. Arrangements have been entrusted to Shorts Spicer Crislip Funeral Home Ravenna Chapel. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.sscfuneralhomes.com.
