Gloria Mae Porter, 88, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015, at her residence in Whiteland.

She was born on Dec. 27, 1926, in West Dummerston, Vermont. Her parents were Eli F. Porter and Ruth E. (Clark) Porter.

She is survived by one son, Reve (Stephanie) Porter of Whiteland; one daughter, Kimberly Newsom of Tennessee; one sister, Sylvia Young of Whiteland; and grandchildren, Aaren, Eli and Ian Porter; step-grandchildren, Matt, Brent and Ryan Covele.

She was preceded in passing by one brother, Howard W. Park.

Gloria received her bachelor’s degree at the University of New Hampshire and her master’s degree from Indiana University.

Gloria was an art teacher at Clark Pleasant Middle School from 1967 to 1991.

She was a life member of the National Education Association, a member of Indiana State Teachers Association and the Johnson County Retired Teachers Association.

Many years were spent traveling the world with Ohio State University study groups from the Columbus, Ohio campus.

The study groups visited schools and universities and home in the countries visited. During her teaching years, she was able to bring her experiences back to her classroom.

A request from Indiana Sheriff’s Association to become an associate member was an honor that she accepted because “Shop with a Cop” was her favorite, and many of the county sheriff deputies had been her students.

In 1998, she was commissioned into the Order of Kentucky Colonels for her years of service teaching in the public schools.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 North Morton St. (U.S. 31 North), in Franklin. Burial will be at Locust Ridge Cemetery in Brattleboro, Vermont.
