Paul William Mays, born July 5, 1935, to Carlos William and Della Vance Mays, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 3, 2015 after a long and wonderful life of 79 years. His time on earth was spent being a marvelous husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend to all the multitudes that had the pleasure of knowing him. The fact that he was a born again Christian, enabled him to be the best in every way.

He was loved dearly by his wife, Erma Jean Mays, of 62 years, respected and reverenced by his children, grandchildren and son-in-laws. He worked hard to support his family, not only in material things, but in unconditional love and encouragement throughout their childhood and even still as adults. He was so great that words could not express the depth of his love, unselfishness, courage, wisdom, dedication, kindness, and knowledge that was bestowed upon all that knew him.

Paul was an active member of the Poplar Creek Church of Christ for 49 years, where he served as former deacon and choir member. He was an avid musician, loving bluegrass and gospel music. He was the lead singer of the Mays Family Gospel Quartet. His greatest joy was that he taught all of his children to sing almost before they could talk. He was an avid woodworker and made many special pieces to share with friends and family. He loved telling old stories and jokes and enjoyed laughing with friends and family. He worked in the coal industry for 42 years prior to retirement.

Paul was a very proud Papaw, always envolved with his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Carlos William and Della Vance Mays, he was preceded in death by one brother, Danny Robert Mays, several cousins, aunts, uncles and Mother-in-law Georgia Roberts.

Paul is survived by his wife Erma Jean Tollison Mays of Maxie, Virginia, one son, David Mays of Abingdon, Virginia, two daughters, Vicki (Mark) Bowles of Maxie, Virginia, Kelly Jo (Jim) Sexton of Bristol, Tennessee. Extended family Anthony (Regina) Williams of Staunton, Virginia and Franklin (Sandy) Daugherty of Richlands, Virginia; Grandchildren: Bethany (Matthew) Crouse of Grundy, Virginia, Samantha and Nicholas Mays of Abingdon, Virginia, Alexa, Jake and Abigail Sexton of Bristol, Tennessee, Amanda and Aaron Daugherty of Richlands, Virginia.
