"Death of Another Old Citizen.
Mr. Wm. N. Berkley, who had been confined to his home for some time by failing health, consequent upon old age died about seven o'clock yesterday evening. The deceased was 83 years old, having been born at Centreville, Fairfax County, November 25, 1814.

He came to this city when sixteen years old and soon afterward began mercantile pursuits in this city, and for a third of a century his dry goods store near the southwest corner of King and Fairfax streets was a well-known spot. Mr. Berkley took no active part in the political affairs of this city until the outbreak of the war, when, being an advocate of the union, he became a member of the City Council and a Justice of the Peace. While pronounced in his political opinions, he was not of a radical spirit, but was rather inclined to be conciliatory, and had the respect of both factions.
In 1866, a year after the close of the war, the late Hugh Latham was elected Mayor of the city, but he was subsequently deposed by the military authorities, the State being out of the union, and Mr. Berkley was appointed to the position. In 1870 Mr. Latham was re-elected, but in 1872 he was again superseded by Mr. Berkley, who defeated him in the general election. President Grant, after his second inauguration in 1873, appointed Mr. Berkley Postmaster of this city, to fill a vacancy caused by the death of Postmaster N. P. Trist, and he resigned the office of Mayor. He remained in the post office until superseded by Mr. Lewis McKenzie in 1877.
During the past twenty years he had held no office, nor had he engaged in any active business. The deceased had during most of his life been an earnest and consistent member of Trinity M. E. Church. He was known to all our people and was respected and esteemed. He leaves a widow and two sons. Rev. F. P. Berkley, of Fauquier County, and Mr. Harry Berkley, of Washington."
