REV. RUSSELL W. ANNICH, PRESBYTERIAN MINISTER

The Rev. Russell W. Annich, 89, a longtime New Jersey Presbyterian minister serving in Haddon Heights, Trenton and Princeton, died Monday at his home in Pennswood Village, Newtown, Pennsylvania.

Born in Philadelphia, he was a graduate of Northeast High School.

While still in high school he decided on a career in the ministry, said Elizabeth Warfield Johnson Annich, his wife of 59 years.

A 1929 graduate of Maryville College, Maryville, Tennessee, he attended San Francisco Theological Seminary from 1929 to 1930, and then Princeton Theological Seminary from 1930 to 1934, when he received both his bachelor's and master's of divinity.

A Princeton Seminary Fellowship allowed Mr. Annich to continue his studies at the University of Bonn and the University of Berlin in Germany, and then to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He received his doctorate from the Temple University School of Theology in 1943. He was ordained by the Presbytery of Philadelphia in 1932 and was received into the Presbytery of New Brunswick in 1945.

Mr. Annich served four years as pastor of the Grant Street Presbyterian Church in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and in 1939 he became pastor at the First Presbyterian Church of Haddon Heights, where he spent six years.

Pastor emeritus of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Trenton, Mr. Annich was pastor there from 1945 until retiring in 1980. After retiring, he became a part-time pastoral assistant at Nassau Presbyterian Church in Princeton. He remained active there until about two years ago.

Mr. Annich "was very strong in pastoral care for his people," his wife recalled.

Active in the Presbyterian Church USA, Mr. Annich served as stated clerk of the Presbytery of New Brunswick for 15 years from 1953 to 1968, and was a commissioner to the General Assembly in 1937, 1951, and 1959 and to the Synod of the Northeast in 1978 and 1979. He also served as moderator of the Presbytery of New Brunswick and on many synod and presbytery committees.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Annich is survived by a son, Russell W. Jr.; daughters, Janet Elizabeth Annich Winther and the Rev. Lois Helen Annich, and five grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 11 A.M. tomorrow in Nassau Presbyterian Church, Nassau Street, Princeton.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Maryville College Scholarship Fund, Maryville, Tennessee 37801, or the Princeton Theological Seminary Scholarship Fund, Princeton, New Jersey 08544.
