John served as a Second Lieutenant on B-24D "Jack Pot" #42-40280, 321st Bomber Squadron, 90th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in New York prior to the war.

John was "Killed In Action" when his B-24 collided with another B-24, while attempting to land, after an aborted bombing mission to Rabaul. The entire crew was killed in an explosion due to their full bomb load upon impact. The other B-24, badly damaged, managed to land without any fatalities.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
