John Gatliff was the second child of the Rev. John F & Mrs. Emily A.W. Gatliff. He had an elder brother. The family lived at the Vicarage of Saint Mary the Virgin Church, Alveley Shropshire where his father was the pastor.

He attended Malvern Link School under Mr. Douglas and joined Royal Naval College, Osborne in September 1913, St. Vincent Term.

He passed away at Dartmouth Naval College in July 1915, it is believed he died while undergoing treatment for a bowel condition

John's body was returned to Alveley & he was buried in the church yard of St. Mary the Virgin, close to his family.
