Born August 5, 1942, in Charleston, he was a lifelong resident of Colleton County and was the son of the late Spencer Ellis Herndon, Sr., and the late Gladys Elizabeth Hudson Herndon.
Ellis was a devoted farmer and also owned and operated a trucking business for many years.
He was a member of Tabor United Methodist Church. Ellis was well loved and known for his sense of humor.
Surviving are: his wife of forty-six years, Hannah Byrd Herndon; four children, Benjie, Wanda, Gary, and Ellen. There are two grandchildren and a step-grandson.
A private funeral service was held.
