Charles was the son of James Nelson (abt 1874) and Marie Gallagher of Pennsylvania (according to his marriage record).

He was married to Katherine Elizabeth Donnelly Barnett in 1918 (she married George Edward Barnett after his death).

Charles served in the Marine Corps. He was a machinist by trade. At age 21 he was a conductor on the railroad. At one time Charles had worked as an upholsterer. He died of tuberculosis in the Asheville-Oteen Veteran's Hospital where he had been for almost an entire year away from his wife and family. He developed TB from living in military barracks. He probably never saw his son William who was born the same week that he entered the hospital in North Carolina.

He was the father of the following known children:

1-Marie Nelson (1919-2006 Phila)
2-Charles Albert Nelson, Jr. (1921-1995 NJ), married Florence
3-PFC William Jay Nelson (1925-1944) died in World War II

NOTE- There is no birth record on file with West Virginia Vital Statistics under the name Charles Nelson or Gallagher for the late 1890's. Also, his marriage record states he was a year older- born in 1897.
