James L. Smedley, age 85, of U.S. 60 West, Morehead, passed away Saturday, January 3, 2015, at Ridgeway Nursing and Rehabilitation in Owingsville. He was born August 5, 1929, in Rowan County, a son of the late Samuel and Eva DeHart Smedley. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, William, Oscar, Junior, and Roger Smedley, and three sisters, Mae Lambert, Juanita Bone, and Madgelean Mabry. His wife of 59 years, Loretta Conn, passed away April 6, 2009.
Mr. Smedley is survived by two sons, Jerry Smedley and wife Judy of Jacksonville, Florida, and Bobby D. Smedley of Morehead; five grandchildren: David York, John and Wendy Smedley, Jennifer and Howard Manning, Jason and Amanda Wells, and Andy Wells; and 14 great grandchildren: Alex, Sage, Logan and Eric York, Jayde, Jordyn, Samuel, and Jaymeson Smedley, Jonas, Jaxon, Allison, and Joah Wells, and Hannah and Henry Manning.
During his more than fifty working years, James was a surveyor with R. L. Adkins Engineering, a heavy equipment operator with Ruth Brothers Construction, Bizzack Construction, WSH Construction, and Davis Construction; and a truck driver for J.C. Wells. He often recalled helping with the construction of many of the older buildings at Morehead State University.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 6, 2015, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Gary Madden officiating. Burial will follow in the Clearfield Cemetery. Pallbearers: Ronnie Cornett, John Smedley, Jackie Roberts, Randy Day, Wendall Pernell, and Cleo Sloan.
