Ella Sterling Carter, 102 years old, made a peaceful transition from this life on December 27, 2014 at Merciful Hands Assisted Living Program in Sugarland, TX.
She was born on October 22, 1912 in Galveston, TX, the third of four children and the only girl born to the union of Samuel and Fredonia Sterling. She received her early education from Galveston ISD. She later attended Prairie View College in Prairie, TX, Thurston Secretarial Training School and UCLA, Los Angeles. Ella and her family joined Wesley Tabernacle UMC in Galveston. She later attended Washington Chapel Methodist Church in Tuskegee, AL.
She married Howard Carter Jr. (also a Galveston native and an Army serviceman) in the early forties. They relocated to Tuskegee Institute, AL where they both worked for the Veteran’s Administration for many years.
She was proceded in death by her parents, her husband, Howard Carter, Jr., her brothers: Samuel Sterling (Lois) of Compton, CA, Randall Sterling Sr. (Cora), Galveston, TX and Dr. Leroy Sterling, Sr. (Louella), Galveston, TX and a nephew Randall Sterling, Jr. (Joyce Lynn), Texas City, TX.
She leaves to cherish her memories her nieces: Joyce Sterling Whitter of Silver Springs, MD, Cora Sterling Thurmond of Wndsor Hills, CA; nephews: Dr. Leroy Sterling, Jr. (Lorraine) of Houston, TX, Donald Sterling of Houston, TX, Louis Sterling. Apple Valley, CA; great nieces and nephews, two additonal generations of nieces and nephews, her god daughter Mabel Wynn of Anderson, SC and a host of other friends.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, January 6, 2015, followed by funeral service at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Wynn Funeral Home at 602-32nd Street, Galveston, TX 77550.
