Louis was a native of Italy. He came to America and settled in Barre, Vermont. Louis was a granite sculptor, so it's not surprising that he settled in the self-proclaimed "Granite Capital of the World". Louis carved stones of granite into masterpieces with recently invented compressed air tools, making his work go faster, but also subjecting him to choking clouds of granite dust on a daily basis. Louis became a partner at Brusa Brothers, one of the many stone sheds in Barre. He died of silicosis, more than likely due to the granite dust he had inhaled daily. Before his death, Louis wanted to tell his story and warn others, so he commissioned fellow granite-carver Don Colletti, to craft a statue of a man dying of silicosis. Louis was the model for the man and his wife Mary posed as the woman cradling the dying man. Rumor has it that the woman was actually not his wife Mary. The woman bears a striking resemblance to his mistress.
