Beth Patton 88 of Wessington Springs died Thursday November 27, 2014 at the Weskota Manor/Avera Health in Wessington Springs. Funeral services were December 2, 2014 at the United Church of Christ. Burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Beth Knight was born on November 2, 1926 at the farm home of Madge and George Powell. She was to third daughter of Irving and Bernice (Homewood) Knight and one of 14 children. She attended elementary and high school at Gann Valley, SD graduating in 1944. Beth worked for her older brothers and sisters caring for their children and for the Chamberlain Soil Conversation office. She enjoyed working for her sister-in-law Jerry (Baker) Knight at the Gann Valley café. She graduated from the Watertown Cosmotology School and worked in several beauty shops in the Watertown area before returning to Wessington Springs.

On October 4, 1947 she married Robert Patton at the Congregational parsonage with the Rev. Hertz officiating. To this union four children were born: Lynn, Janet, Diane and Blake. Beth kept the business books for both the Patton Market and eventually the Jack and Jill store. When time came for the circus Days promotion Beth easily crafted 5-10 clown outfits for the employees. She, like her mother before her sewed most of her children’s clothes. When Bob and Beth sold the Jack and Jill store in 1981 they trained with Motel 6 Company and traveled and worked in nine states as relief managers. She enjoyed traveling and learning about the different regions of the United States. The couple traveled to Spain, Hawaii, the Bahamas, and Mexico.

Beth had a passion for gardening, both for the beauty of the flowers and the vegetables crop each fall. She was canning dozens of jars of tomatoes, beets, and corn well past her eightieth year. She and her husband Bob loved to feed the neighborhood birds and delighted in seeing the migrating hummingbirds. She was a member of the Springs Golf Club, women’s bowling league, United Church of Christ. In 1945 her mother, Bernice Knight sponsored her in the Eastern Star and in 2013 she earned her 68th year pin.

She is survived by her four children Lynn and Martha Patton of Pierre, SD, Janet and Roger Easton of Whitewood, SD, Diane Patton of Wessington Springs and Blake and Loretta Patton of Montrose, CO; eight grandchildren Tina (Sean) Espe, Scott Patton, Susanne Lindsey-Easton, Joshua Patton, Daniel (Stacie) Patton, Lindsey (Scot) Hawks, Amanda (Jason) Dodson, Tony Patton; and thirteen great grandchildren; three brothers David Knight of College Station, TX, James (Donna) Knight of Huron, SD, Roger Knight of Huron; two sisters Dorothy (Maynard Willman of Wessington Springs and Beverly (Steve) Bailey of Caladona, MI; one sister-in-law Bertha Knight of Highmore, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, Franklin and his wife Helen, Donnie and his wife Irma, Harold and his wife Jerry, Wayne and Darrel Knight; three sisters Elenor King and her husband Jim, Lenore Urban and her husband Don, Donna Kirkpatrick and her husband Gene; two sisters-in-law Elinor Reindel and Marcia Abernathy, one infant brother Jerry and one grandson Michael Patton.
