Miss Gladys has many interests
Mrs. Gladys McCall, a very busy retired school teacher, has again designed the cover for the 1973 LA Fur and Wildlife Festival program and recipe book, according to W. R. Smith, chairman of the book committee.
This year's book cover will feature shrimp, since the festival is honoring the shrimp industry this year. The 1972 Festival Queen Miss Gail Riggs and Festival King, John Paul Crain, will also appear on the cover.
Mrs. McCall, who taught in the 1st through 6th grades in the Creole and Grand Chenier elementary school for 41 years, has been retired since 1966.
She keeps very busy with her hobbies of china painting, oil painting, ceramics, sewing and teaching her 14 grandchildren art.
"Miss Gladys," as she is affectionately called, was born and reared on Grand Chenier. ,Her parents were Alcide and Emma Nunez Miller. Her father was one of the early boatmen who earned his living plying the Mermentau [River].
"Miss Gladys" has a deep interest in the history of Cameron parish and has enough antiques and mementoes to fill a small museum.
One of her prized possessions, which has stood the ravages of time and a devastating hurricane is a 12-place setting of hand painted china which she painted while she was in college at Louisiana Tech in Ruston [LA] 53 years ago. The dresden blue design is still as brilliant as the day, it was painted.
Now that the Festival book is at the printers -Miss Gladys has turned her attention to painting vases and pictures for Christmas presents. (Contributed by Oma McCall)
