The obituary of John D. Back as published in the December 31, 1953, issue of The Mountain Eagle (page 1):
John D. Back Passes Away
On Thursday, December 24, 1953, like the folding of the petals of a new bloomed flower, the life and all that was mortal of John D. Back, a son of the late John S. Back and Martha Hampton Back lost its activity and the spirit winged its way to God who gave it. At the time of death he was 31 years of age.
Although he was not as strong as most men, no one ever knew a more friendlier or more manlier young man, meeting everyone with a kind word and pleasant smile.
His Associates at the Wardrup Packing Company where he was employed will miss him, as well as his many relatives and friends. He is survived by his companion, his sainted mother, five brothers, Harvey, Wesley, Leslie, Jerry and James, and five sisters, Mrs. Millie Honeycutt, Mrs. Betty Caudill, Mrs. Hetty Cornett, Mattie and Margaret.
He was married to Jessie Back Dixon, May 1, 1953.
Funeral services were held at the Old Indian Bottom Baptist Church.
Elders W. B. Hall, W. C. Campbell and I. D. Back officiated. Craft Funeral Home in charge with burial on Caudill Branch.
