Son of the Honourable John Forster Alleyne and Elizabeth Gibbes {Willing} Alleyne, his wife

Henry Alleyne was baptised in Saint James Parish Church Church, Barbados on May 25, 1808

On February 25, 1835, he married Mary Reeve James in St James Parish

Henry died at sea two nights after his 44th birthday, when the newly commissioned Royal Mail steam ship 'Amazon' was totally consumed by fire off the entrance to the Bay of Biscay, France. Of the estimated 162 persons who were on board when she left Southampton, England, with mail and other cargo for the West Indies and the Gulf of Mexico, only 46 were found saved. Mr Henry Alleyne was amongst those lost

Arms — Quarterly, 1 and 4, Per chevron Ermine and Gules, two lions' heads erased Or (Alleyne); 2 and 3, Sable, a hand issuing from sinister side couped, grasping three arrows, one in pale and two in saltire (Willing), all Or; impaling. Quarterly of 4: 1. Argent, two bars doubly embattled Gules (James of Ightham, Kent); 2. Argent, a chevron Sable between three millrinds transverse (James); 3. Barry wavy of six Argent and Azure, on a chief Or three swallows volant (Morskyn, of Liège); 4. Ermine, on a bend engrailed Azure three cinquefoils Or (Lowe)

Sacred to the Memory of / THE HONOURABLE HENRY ALLEYNE / Member of His Majesty's Council / in this Island / (youngest son of / THE HON'L JOHN FORSTER ALLEYNE / of Porters, in this Parish,) / who was born on / the 2nd January 1808, / and perished at sea, / by the burning of / the Royal Mail Steamer Amazon, / off Ushant in the Bay of Biscay, / during the night of the / 3rd and 4th January 1852 / To the inexpressible grief and sorrow of this entire community, as well as of his own immediate family and friends, to perpetuate the remembrance of such high integrity, worth and excellence as are rarely exemplified in either public or private life, this Monument is Erected by his bereaved and deeply afflicted Widow
