James was the son of Lawrence William Butler (1895-1956) and Ellen Virginia Clough (1899-1990). James' mother was born in Hillsboro NH. James Sr. was a farmer, born in East Tilton NH, residing in Danbury NH at the time of his marriage. James Jr. had two sisters, Marion and Virginia. He worked as mill operative. He enlisted in the Army on September 16, 1940, in Franklin, New Hampshire, during World War II. He was 20 years old at the time. He married Rita LaFlamme at St. John’s Rectory on Concord NH on Apr. 25, 1942. In 1943 they lived at 111 S Main in Penacook NH. In the 50s and beyond they lived in the Concord and Franklin (Tilton-Northfield) NH area. Later, in the early 90s, they spent leisure time together in New Port Richey, Florida.
