For six seasons (1946 to 1947, 1950 to 1952 and 1957), he played at the outfielder position with the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Indians and Washington Senators. Born Robert Royce Usher, he attended San Diego High School and following graduation, he was signed by the Reds as an amateur free agent in 1943. He was stationed in the Pacific with the United States Navy during World War II and following his return home, he attended Miami University of Ohio and later Syracuse University. He marked his Major League debut with Cincinnati on April 16, 1946 and played in 92 games that year. His most productive season was in 1950, when he recorded a career-high 83 hits. In 428 regular season games, he compiled 259 hits with a lifetime .235 batting average. After retiring from baseball, he worked as a US Naval Intelligence Officer.
