Artist, iconographer. William Chavalas came to America in 1908 after studying at the University of Athens. He was head of the decorating department at Fox West Coast Theaters from 1941-1952. He also was the iconographer who designed and executed (painted) all 200 art works (murals) at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Los Angeles and had been working to complete the last 2 paintings at the time of his death. His funeral held at the cathedral was officiated by the top prelates of the Greek Church and he was given the honor of being entombed in the chapel adjacent to the church where the church founder and builder Charles Skouras is as well.
