Italian President/Prime Minister. A native of Pieve Tesino in the Tirol, Austria-Hungary, now part of Trento in Italy, De Gasperi is considered on of the Founding Fathers of the European Communities. A noted Italian journalist, statesman and politician, De Gasperi served as the President of Italy from June 12, 1946 to June 29, 1946, and as Prime Minister of Italy from December 10, 1945 to August 2, 1953. De Gasperi also served as a Member of Parliament in the Austrian Reichsrat in 1911, and was a founder of the Italian Popular Party in 1919, before serving as an MP in 1921, and Party Leader, and Secretary General. He later served time in jail and worked at the Vatican before organizing the Christian Democracy Party. In 1952, De Gasperi was awarded the International Charlemagne Prize of the City of Aachen, for his contribution to the European idea and European peace. De Gasperi passed away on August 19, 1954, in Sella di Valsugana, Trentino, Italy.
