Gary Lee Hastings, age 73 of Fargo, ND, (formerly Bismarck), passed away on December 28, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 2, 2015, at 12:30 p.m. at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 1143 N. 26th Street, Bismarck, ND, with Rev. Larry Giese officiating.

Burial will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Family will be greeting visitors starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, January 1, at Eastgate Funeral Service, 2302 E Divide Avenue, Bismarck, where a prayer service will start at 7 p.m.

Gary was born on September 30, 1941, in Jamestown, ND, to Elsie (Kurtz) and Don Hastings. In May 1966, Gary married Betty (Bier) Hastings. They made their home in the Bismarck-Mandan area for 46 years until moving to Fargo to be closer to family in 2012.

In his high school years, Gary played baseball for the Jamestown American Legion and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1959. Gary started his professional career with Skaar Engineering, now known as Wold Engineering, in 1964 and worked for them until 1981. He then worked for the City of Bismarck engineering department until his retirement in 2006. Gary also served with the Army National Guard for over 31 years retiring in 2001.

Gary was kind hearted and a man of few words, but he could still be a practical jokester. Everyone will remember him for his infectious laugh, witty one liners and having one more "short one" before calling it a night. He was an avid golfer, liked to play cards, go to auctions, collect coins and occasionally hunt and fish with his buddies. He loved listening to classical music, bluegrass and big band. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends for many years.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Donald Richard Hastings; brother-in-law, Gordon Roach; and a couple of very special friends.
