Rev. Hunter passed over the “Great Divide” on Monday, Dec. 29, 2014, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, surrounded by his loving family.
Ben was born in Columbus, Ohio on Dec. 29, 1930, to J. Keith and Maude (Hartz) Hunter. The family moved to Rock Island in 1932. While attending Rock Island High School, Ben was active in the Boy Scouts of America and achieved the Eagle Scout award. He played tennis, ran track, was active in theater, the camera club and band.
He attended Augustana College, where he was a member of Beta Omega Sigma Fraternity; then he was drafted into the U.S. Army during his third year. He was a combat veteran in Korea’s 45th Division from 1952–1953 and was transferred to the 5th Regimental Combat Team from 1953–1954. He completed and received his B.A. degree from Augustana in 1955.
Ben enrolled at the University of the South, attending the School of Theology in Sewanee, Tenn., where he received his master’s degree and married Alice Vernier. In 1960, he was ordained an Episcopal priest. Ben attended graduate school at Southern Illinois University. Rev. Hunter served churches in Peoria, Champaign, Mattoon, Anna, Kewanee, Preemption and Geneseo. He was chaplain at Eastern Illinois University, the Quad-City Downs and the Q-C Veterans Center and was a Cancer Crusade Chairman in two communities. Every September, he served as Chaplain for the Stand Down, a weekend devoted to assisting homeless veterans. He is currently married to Lynn Swoboda-Hunter. They have spent over 32 years together taking many trips, attending Cardiac Rehab and enjoying time with families.
Memorials may be made to the Q-C Veterans Center in Moline, the homeless veteran program at Humility of Mary Shelter, Inc., or the Honor Flight of the Quad-Cities.
Rev. Hunter was a member of the Korean War Veterans, Chapter 168, the Elks Lodge, Plus 60 and was a lifetime member of the Boy Scouts of America. He was also a founding member of the Big Six Studebaker Drivers Club. Other memberships include the Antique Ford Club, NRA and the Rock River Valley Association. He was a past president of the Air Force Association. Ben enjoyed boating, water skiing and working on restoring old cars. He recently completed the restoration of his 1930 Model A Ford that he and his brother John drove to high school. Ben was a very social and outgoing person who was loved by everyone. He was full of life with a fun and loving personality. He loved people and made friends with everyone he met. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army and never tired of telling or hearing about the experiences of other veterans. He had a wonderful time on Honor Flight 21.
Survivors include his wife, Lynn; son, Jamie (Lucy) Hunter; daughter, Beth (Thom) Masterson; and grandchildren, Edward Benjamin (EB), Rebeccah, Paige and Carly, all of Indianapolis; stepchildren, Jane (John) Malcuit and Chris (Sue) Iffert, all of Davenport; Amy (Rich) Lovig, Van Meter, Iowa, and Mark (Jennifer) Swoboda, Eldridge; stepgrandchildren, Jacy, Katie, Joe and Ted; sister-in-law, Ann Hunter; and niece, Sabrina Alberhasky, both of Iowa City. He will be dearly missed by his large extended and loving family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John.
