Carlyle Tillery, author of a popular novel, RED BONE WOMAN (Thomas Day Co., 1950; Avon Books, Jan. 1951), was the son of William Hutchinson Tillery and Carrie Inez Roberts and a descendant of Henry Tillery (1651-1698) of Richmond, Virginia.

His great-grandmother Elizabeth Jane Womack Tillery was the daughter of Abraham, son of David, son of Richard Womack III.

A memorial service for Thomas Carlyle Tillery, 83, of 1806 Fourth Ave., who died Friday at Heritage Health Care Center, will be 2 p.m. Monday in Forest Lake United Methodist Church. The Rev. Reid Crotty will officiate.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Wilson Tillery, Tuscaloosa; a daughter, Sarah Tillery Caldwell, Salina, Kan.; a son, Edward William Tillery, Amarillo, Texas; two sisters, Irma Tillery Watson, Monroe, La., and Hazel Tillery Meadows, Ruston, La.; and three grandchildren.
In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the flower fund of Florest Lake United Methodist Church.


Born Dec. 6, 1904 in Greensburg, La. Education– Mississippi State College, B.S., 1928; studied under Hudson Strode at the University of Alabama for three years. In years before World War II he was a statistical clerk in agricultural economics and agronomy; a timekeeper on a banana plantation in Central America for two years; served in U.S. Army in World War II; after 1945 worked in Jitney Jungle supermarket in Tuscaloosa.
The Hoole Special Collections Library at the University of Alabama holds some of Carlyle Tillery's papers, notably the galley proofs of his novel.
