Roy Skelton was born in Wenatchee, WA in 1944. He moved to Leavenworth, WA when he was six. As a young boy, he loved to ski and play football. He broke both wrists jumping C hill on Leavenworth jumps. In high school, he loved to play football and was known as “snowshoe” because he could run in the snow, due to his feet being so big. He graduated from Leavenworth High School and enlisted in the Army, before they could draft him, in 1964. He was sent to Germany with the armored division and he remained there until his honorable discharge in 1967. In 1968, he married Mikie Stanphill from Peshastin, WA and they had two sons, Shane and Randy. They moved to Prospect, OR when Randy was only two days old. Roy was in charge of the Rogue River Hot Shots until he became Assistant Fire Management Officer and moved to Heppner, OR. Three years later, the family moved to Winthrop, WA, where Roy served as Fire Management Officer from 1976 to 1995, when he retired from federal service. Roy and Mikie raised their family in the Methow Valley. After retiring from the Forest Service in 1995, he performed various other jobs to include driving sewer truck, fuel truck, and cutting meat, until he became an electrician and started his own business, which he had for ten years. This past year, Roy and Mikie finally decided to become snowbirds and went to Arizona for the winter and this is where Roy became ill.

He is survived by wife, Mikie; son, Shane and wife, Mystie and children, Beth, Colton and Trent, all living in Twisp, WA; son, Randy and wife, Angel and three children, Madison, Maggie and Caden, all of McCall, ID; and a sister, Gail Eakin of Redmond WA. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister.

His favorite thing to do was flying air attack on wildland fires all over the U.S. He was a member of the Elks Club, Eagles, V.F.W. and American Legion. Everyone who knew him will miss his dry sense of humor. He loved hunting, fishing and the outdoors.

There will be Memorial honoring Roy at the Eagles Hall in Twisp at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 4, 2012. In lieu of flowers or cards, donations may be made to Look Out Coalition, Room One or the Aero Methow Rescue.
