Another Pioneer Dead.

Last Thursday afternoon Fred. J. Benest, the President of the Greenwood County Bank passed away.

Just a year ago Mr. Benest was taken celebral hemorhage and at various times through the year he had other slight attacks, the one last week proving fatal.

The funeral was held Friday at the M.E. church at which a great concourse of peopel gathered to pay their tribute of respect to the dead. Rev. Gardner preached the sermon and Rev. Rogers read the scripture. The church though large was not near large enough to hold all who wished to attend and many had to stand outside. The business houses closed so that all could go to the funeral.

Frederick Joshua Benest was born at Marion, Iowa, May 29, 1849 and died at Severy, Kansas, July 23, 1908, aged 59 years, 1 month and 24 days. He came to Kansas and settled on a claim 2 miles west of Severy in the spring of 1871 and resided there until the spring of 1890 when he moved to town.

He was married to Mary E. Jordan Feb. 16, 1872. To this union were born one daughter, Nellie, and three sons, Walter died in infancy and Nellie when nineteen years old, Irwin F. and Bud M. are living. Mr. Benest also leaves three sisters in Iowa, and two brothers in Logan, Kansas.

The great assemblage of people from far and near at the funeral speaks more of the respect in which Mr. Benest was held by the people of this community more that any words we can offer, as a cool headed businessman, a friend, an open hearted man those in need Mr. Benest had no peer. He will be sadly missed by a host of friends.
