Joseph married Amy Vermilia Buck on April 12, 1887 in Merrill, Wisconsin. They farmed in Wisconsin and had nine children - Edwin, Clara, Gladys, Elmer, Beatris, Joseph, Amy, Jean and Orrin Lyle. Beatris was born on July 10, 1896 and died on January 30, 1897 in Wisconsin. They moved to Oregon after 1912 where Joseph worked as a laborer. Sometime, following the death of his wife, Joseph moved to California.
