Maria Elena was a devout Catholic, a member of Santa Rosa De Lima Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of America, and taught Catechism to many students. An educator for 30 years for the Benavides Independent School District, and a leader in civil service for 19 years. Most of all, a mother who will forever be loved and cherished by her family and the many lives she touched.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnoldo; her parents; her brothers, Hector Chapa, Manuel Chapa, Victor Chapa, Lazaro Chapa Jr., Leo Chapa; and her sister, Olga C. Caballero.
Maria Elena is survived by her sisters, Elva(†Celso) Gonzalez, Arcadia "Kala" (Cleofas) Gonzalez, Juanita "Juanie" (†Theodoro "Lolo") Soza; and her children, Arnoldo (Carolina) Alaniz, Jaime (Leslie) Alaniz, and Norma (Eloy) Carrillo; her grandchildren, Amanda (Bradford) Bonilla, Arnoldo R. Alaniz II, Matthew E. Carrillo, Isabella N. Carrillo, Fabian A. Alaniz, and her great granddaughter, Katherine Carolina Bonilla, all of whom she loved dearly, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Maria Elena lived a peaceful life in the city she loved so dearly, Benavides Texas. She was constantly surrounded by her family and friends from the area. We would like to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers, and support during this difficult time. Visitation will be held from 5p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at the Garza Funeral Home in San Diego, Texas with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. that evening. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at Santa Rosa De Lima Catholic Church in Benavides, Texas. Interment will follow at the Benavides Cemetery in Benavides, Texas
