James was the son of William Jones and Martha R. Izatt Jones. He immigrated to America in 1923 with his family and was educated in the schools at Kelty and at Brooklyn High School Brooklyn, New York. He later studied at Clay Club at New York City and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1930, he worked as a clerk at a telephone company. James was a singer and a dioramist and made his living as a sculptor. His dioramas were exhibited at the New York World's Fair and the Museum of Natural History at New York City. James married to Gertrude Fish on 22 April 1939 at Roxbury, New York. They were the parents of two children.
