Laura Jane Coan Carroll was the daughter of James Elliott (Elton) Coan and Nancy W. (Walker) Long. Her middle initial is listed as " J " in several documents, and her aunt was named Mary Jane Coan; so, I am assuming Laura's middle name was Jane.

She was raised in the area known as Rea Mountain. Documented records for her father living in this area of Franklin County can be found as early as the US Census of 1830. Rea Mountain is a cedar covered mountaintop where the Rea Cemetery is located.

The US Census for 1860 in the Eastern Subdivision of Franklin County, Alabama finds her at age 4, and the US Census of 1870 for Township 7 Range 11 of Franklin County, Alabama at age 14; and, in both cases, she is living with her parents.

The 1880 US Census finds Laura J. Coan married to James M. (Martice) Carroll, who is also Alabama born; and they have a young son, Thomas S. (Samuel) Carroll, who is age 2 and was born " About 1878."

Laura Jane Coan Carroll evidently died shortly after that 1880 Census where she was only 24 years old. Due to her young age at death, there is a high probability that she died of tuberculosis. Her son and her granddaughter would also die at relatively young ages, about age 40 and age 15, respectively; and their causes of death may also have been tuberculosis.

Laura Jane Coan Carroll is believed to be buried in an unmarked grave near the graves of her parents at the Rea Cemetery in the Rea Mountain area of Franklin County, Alabama. Information confirming or contradicting any part of my research would be greatly welcomed and appreciated.
