Travis Lynn Taylor, a life-long resident of the Brewton’s Mill community in Winn Parish, Louisiana, returned to his Lord and Savior on December 27, 2014. He was born on September 11, 1945 in Jonesboro, Louisiana, the son of Willie Taylor and Labetha Clark Taylor. The son of a short wood hauler, Travis was destined for a career in the timber industry from an early age. He was a 1963 graduate of Calvin High School and a 1966 graduate of Louisiana Tech University with a degree in Forestry.
A proud and successful husband, father, forester, logger and mentor, Travis was instrumental in advancing the interests of the timber and logging communities his entire career. Travis was a true friend to everyone that he met and was affectionately known for his black CAT hat, which he was seldom seen without. Travis was elected the Louisiana Logger of the Year in 1997 by the Louisiana Forestry Association, and he served as President of the Louisiana Logging Council. He was instrumental in the development of workforce training programs for the logging industry at the Huey P. Long Campus of the Central Louisiana Technical Community College. Travis also served on the Board of Directors of the Timbermen’s Self Insured Fund, and he was the founder of the Southern Loggers Cooperative.
As the culmination of a career spent advancing the logging industry, Travis was elected to serve as a delegate to the American Loggers Council, and he served as President of the American Loggers Council in 2013.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Sharon Burnum Taylor; his daughters: Joanna Lyles and her husband Alan of Madison, Ms., and Cassandra (Sandy) Taylor and her fiancé Jason Blewer of Brewton’s Mill, La.; his self-adopted daughter, Cindy Tilton and her husband Brad of Atlanta, La.; his grand-children: Taylor Dark, Mathew Dark, Ethan Taylor, Blake Gray, and Zackary Lyles; his nieces: Jean Gibbs and her husband Rodney, and Jackie Lewis and her husband Billy; his Sister-In-Laws, Becky Treadway and her husband Eddie of Jonesboro, La., and Jan Towery and her husband Randy of Haughton, La.; his niece, Stacey Walker and husband Darin of Haughton, La.; his nephews, Richie Towery of Haughton, La., and Randall Treadway and wife Rhona of Quitman, La.; his Mother-In-Law, Sybil Burnum of Jonesboro, La.; and his Aunt, Bernice White and her husband Rev. Huey White.
