Born in Appomattox County, Va., on July 14, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Gladys Patteson and Harry Garland Johnson. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and the Laura Lee Stewart Circle. Beck attended Phillips Business College and trained as a bookkeeper and secretary, working several jobs. Her lifetime job was for the Times Virginian, where she began as a young girl working for her aunt and uncle, Earle and Calvin Robinson, until her retirement. She volunteered at Virginia Baptist Hospital, was a Girl Scout leader, and a founding member of the Appomattox County Rescue Squad.
Beck is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia H. and Philip W. Rice of Pamplin; a granddaughter, Samantha R. and her husband, John R. Morton of Pamplin; two sisters, Dorothy (Dot) Coleman and husband, Kenneth (Red) of Appomattox and Barbara Venzke of Virginia Beach; a beloved nephew, Ken Coleman and wife, Marie of Fairfield; two great nephews, Carter Coleman and David Buskey; a great niece, Anna Campbell; two great-great nieces; and a devoted friend, Cathy Bates.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 29, 2014, at Robinson Funeral Home by the Rev. Rusty Small with burial following in Liberty Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
