Hester Barnes, 90, passed away peacefully early Christmas morning, Dec. 25, 2014, at the Golden Living Center of Chase County in Cottonwood Falls, KS, where she had been a resident. Hester Estep was born Sept. 7, 1924, to Harvey Sims and Lizzie (Ford) Estep in Weston, TX. She graduated from Anna High School and was an Honor Graduate with a B. S. Degree in Elementary Education from Texas Women’s University. She married Sam P. Barnes on Nov. 13, 1943, and they were married for 61 years before his passing on Oct. 31, 2004. She was a past member of the Texas State Teachers Association and a member of Flint Hills Community Church in Cottonwood Falls.
Hester taught in the Dumas and Lazbuddie school systems for 23 years. The Barneses retired to Muleshoe in 1983, before moving to Whitesboro in 1989. She moved to Cottonwood Falls in 2004.
Hester is survived by three sons and one daughter: Ronny and Cindy Barnes of Lubbock, Monte and Delayne Barnes of Buffalo Gap, Mark and Karen Barnes of Farwell, and Frank and Marilyn Hinkson of Cottonwood Falls; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three sisters: Oleta Self of Dumas, Una Van Hoozer of Weston, and Audrey Stembridge of Gilmer; and one brother: Aubrey “Bud” Estep of Van Hoover, Washington. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Pearl; and five brothers: Charlie, Vance, Robert, Fred, and Evans “Sas.”
A visitation will be Monday, December 29, 2014, from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M., at theTurrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Celina, Texas.
A celebration of life service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 11:00 A.M., at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home, Celina. Interment will follow at Cottage Hill Cemetery in Celina.
