Mrs. Petrena Bertlesen Day, 82, widow of Joseph Day and a pioneer resident of this city, died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Lund Tuesday from illness incident to age.
Mrs. Day was born in Viborg, Denmark, September 16, 1851, the youngest daughter of Peter and Metta Christine Jensen Bertlesen. She came to Utah in 1873. The journey from Copenhagen to Salt Lake had only consumed 37 days, but after her arrival in Salt Lake she spent two weeks in reaching Ephraim, walking the greater part of the distance. She lived in Ephraim with an uncle, Christian Bertlesen, and later came to Mt. Pleasant to live with another uncle, Neils Bertlesen. She was married in April, 1878, in the L. D. S. endowment house in Salt lake, to Joseph Day of Mt. Pleasant, a veteran of the Black Hawk Indian War. He died April 26, 1902. An adopted son, Martin Day, died August 28, 1885, and she has no known survivors except distant relatives in New England and Denmark. She was an active worker in the L. D. S. church and at the time of her death she was assisting a young man to remain in the L. D. S. mission field.
