J.W. SIMPSON, ME. POLITICIAN, DIES IN YORK
Joseph W. Simpson, former Republican national committeeman for Maine, and a prime factor in the development of York Harbor as a summer resort, died at his York Harbor home Saturday morning after a long illness.
A native of York, where he was born 73 years ago, he was the son of J. Putnam and Mary S. (Lowe) Simpson. He received his early education in the York schools and at Kent’s Hill. Mr. Simpson entered politics when a young man and served in the state Legislature for several terms. Later he served for six years as state treasurer and chairman of the Maine State Republican committee.
He was an assessor in the York Harbor Village corporation for many years and had operated the Marshall House and Emerson hotel here. He was treasurer of the Marshall House corporation. He was also a past president of the Maine state and New England Hotel Men’s associations and a member of the American Hotel Men’s association. He was one of the founders of the Maine Publicity Bureau in which he had been active.
Mr. Simpson was president of the York County Trust company until it closed in 1933 and also was a director in numerous insurance companies. As Republican national committeeman he welcomed Colonel and Mrs. Lindbergh in June 1943 when they stopped at York Harbor while on their wedding trip.
He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Maude S. Wentworth of Brooklin, Mass. and two nieces. He was a member of the Masons and a Shriner and also an honorary member of the York village volunteer firemen, known as the “Red Shirts.”

Funeral services were held this afternoon at the First Parish church. York Village, for Joseph W. SImpson, 73, who died Saturday at his home. Rev. W. H. Millinger officiated.
Bearers were MOrton Fry, Russell Roberts, Dr. W. S. Perhina, J. P. Bragdon, Nathaniel Marshall and Ralph W Hawkes.
Interment was in the family lot in Village cemetery.
