Samuel came to this area in 1835 and settled in Maumee, OH. He was the first person elected to hold the position of Lucas County Auditor. He began mentoring a law student Morrison R. Waite (who went on to become Chief Justice of the Supreme Court) and they practiced law together for 4 years. Samuel held several other titles in his lifetime, including President of the Branch of the Commercial Bank of Ohio, Adjutant of the Ohio militia, President of the Toledo Coke and Gaslight Company, and Director of the Cleveland & Toledo Railroad Company. He was president and principal stockholder in the Boody House, considered one of the finest hotels around. Samuel, with a partner Abner Backus, established grain elevators along the Maumee River and was instrumental in creating the Maumee River Bridge, being one of its owners. in 1841, Samuel married Angeline L. Upton, whose step-father was Dr. Horatio Conant, a founding father of Maumee.

This is a family plot with Samuel & Angeline, son Frank with wife Ida, son Horatio with wife Antoinette, son Morrison with 1st wife Kittie along with an infant and 2nd wife Julia, son Charles, and Angeline's brother John Upton. Also buried here is Samuel's young daughter Lizzie Young.
