Peggy Janet Baker Houston, 56, of the 100 block of Sumter St., died June 18, 1999, at the home of her daughter in Hayward, Calif.

Born in Norfolk County, she was a retired computer specialist from Pacific Bell Telephone Co. with 25 years of service. She had also worked as a tax preparer for H&R Block for four years. She was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church, Portsmouth, where she was a member of the financial committee and the committee for feeding the hungry. She was a missionary, taught Bible study and worked with the youth of the church. Mrs. Houston was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star and was a former Worthy Matron and a former Grand Lodge Officer.

Survivors include her husband, Samuel W. Houston of Portsmouth; a daughter, Roslinda Hall of Hayward, Calif.; six stepdaughters, Delrosea Johnson, Eldrena Lesure, Sandra Smith, Vicki Spears, Rosalind Houston and Colina Houston; three sons, Tommy Baker and Christopher Ford, both of Hayward, and Robert Ford Jr. of Chandler, Ariz.; two stepsons, Eric Houston and Samuel W. Houston Jr.; her mother, Catherine F. Johnson of Portsmouth; five sisters, Angela Price of Berkley, Calif., Wanda Morgan of Antioch, Calif., Karen Ellis and Lisa Adams, both of Portsmouth, and Lydia Burke of Richmond; two brothers, Charles H. Baker III and Lee A. Baker, both of Portsmouth; 19 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Emanuel A.M.E. Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Charles H. Harvin. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home will begin at noon today. The body will be taken to the church at 11 a.m. Saturday.
