Marine Cpl. John T. Olson of Elk Grove Village, Ill was a 2001 graduate of Elk Grove Village High School and a former student at Harper College. He was an engaging man who was close to his father, mother and 16-year-old sister. He wasn't a big guy, but he was a tough little cookie who had a beautiful smile that really lit up a room. He saw his mission in Iraq as a job that had to be done. When he returned home on leave, dressed in his Marine uniform, he was embarrassed when people would come up to him and thank him for his military service. He always volunteered for the heavy duty jobs in Iraq, and he was never afraid. Prior to joining the service, he was a supervisor for UPS in Palatine. As a youngster, he was involved in the Elk Grove Park District Baseball traveling team and Freshman High School Baseball. He was killed by hostile action in Anbar province, Iraq at age 21.
