1924 - 2014 David H. Rust of Woodville, Texas died December 25, 2014 at the age of 90.
He leaves these words: I was raised out of failure into marvelous success by the grace of Jesus Christ, whom I accepted as Lord on July 7, 1973.
I grew up in Louisiana. At age 19 I realized my highest ambition, going into combat with Chennault's Flying Tiger Sharks in China. Returning to college, I graduated from Tulane in 1949. In 1950 I met and married Eugenia, the delight of my life. Soon after, I went back into combat in Korea. After a tour of duty in the Cold War with the world's first A-bomb-carrying fighter wing, I retired from the USAF in 1956.
Embarking on a new career with Schlumberger Well Surveying Corporation, I ran the company's open and cased hole services for customers at oil-field locations on land and water. In 1971 I was transferred to the Schlumberger-Doll Research Center in Ridgefield, Connecticut, where I became editor of the company's world-wide technical magazine. I took early retirement at the end of 1981.
By 1965 my life had run out of meaning. In that year I became a friend of Bill W., and all my perceptions began to change. In 1973 I was granted membership in the Body of Christ and soon afterwards was baptized in the Holy Spirit. The Lord led me into prison ministry, first in Connecticut, then Houston, and finally in Woodville, Texas. We've been members of Saint Paul's Church in Darien, Connecticut, Church of the Redeemer in Houston, Saint Paul's Church in Woodville and finally First Baptist Church of Woodville. Our lives have been rich beyond compare, by the grace of Jesus Christ who leads us and gives our days meaning.
Though saddened by this temporary parting from my beloved family and friends, let it be known that I welcome this termination of my apprenticeship. If you grieve, grieve only that we will be parted for yet a little while. Of those I leave behind, most precious are my immediate family. My wife Eugenia has run the whole race, one with me in love. Our daughters are Elizabeth Rust of Nashua, NH, and Julia Rust of Irvington, NY. Julia's children are our most special grandchildren, Peter Wood, Katy Wood, and Tim Wood.
