James Rodger Hoff
(July 7, 1941 - December 21, 2014)

James R. Hoff, 73, of Fort Collins passed away at his Fort Collins home on December 21, 2014. Jim was born in Timnath, Colorado on July 7, 1941 to John and Amelia Hoff. After graduating from Timnath High School, he attended Northeastern Jr. College and received his Associates degree. Jim loved old cars and was in the process of restoring a 1935 Chevrolet at the time of his death. Several years ago he built his own Kit car. Jim loved riding his motorcycle, fishing in nearby lakes and streams, road trips with his family and was an excellent Square Dancer. He was retired from the City of Fort Collins where he worked in the Surveyor’s Office for over thirty years. He was an accomplished woodworker and was a volunteer at the Fort Collins Senior Center teaching woodworking. Survivors include his daughters Cynthia (David) Brown of Cheyenne, Wyoming and Carrie Fajardo of Arvada, Colorado, sister Donna Carlson of Holdrege, Nebraska and 4 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and a sister. A graveside service with burial of cremains will be held on Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at Grandview Cemetery at 11:00 A.M.

Eulogy: Delivered by the Rev. David Williams

That dash after his date of birth has now been filled to 12/21/2014
Jim was 73 years, five months and fourteen days old.
Jim was proud that his middle name was spelled R-O-D-G-E-R, as that gave him individuality.

Jim retired from the city of Fort Collins, where he worked as City Surveyor. He believed in doing a full honest day of work. Everybody knew Jim. He was a man of his word, had a great sense of humor and very few, if any enemies. Jim had many friends whom he cherished going all the way back to his school years. Even those who had moved hundreds of miles away, Jim still kept in touch with.

There wasn’t much Jim couldn’t do. He was an avid fisherman, a square dancer, made many fine pieces of furniture and whirly-gigs, and was an excellent mechanic. He had built a kit-car and loved restoring old cars, one of which being the 1935 Ford Cupe, which is almost complete today. He also loved riding his motorcycle.

Jim is survived by his two beautiful daughters, Cindi and Carrie from his first marriage to Jackie. And he has four grandchildren. He is also survived by an older sister Donna Carlson. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.

Jim’s health had declined tremendously in the last few years, to where at times he could hardly walk to his mail box, or climb the stairs to his bedroom.

On Sunday evening December 21, as Jim climbed those stairs, he had no idea it would be his last. As Jim lay back on his bed that night, he quietly passed away.

Let us be thankful for the time we shared with Jim, and may we all remember that none of us know when that dash after our date of birth will be filled.
