Funeral services will be held at Bethel Baptist Church in Nacogdoches, Texas.

Graveside services will follow at 2 p.m. at the Alexander Cemetery in Leggett, Texas.

Jenarie Alexander, 86, of Nacogdoches, Texas, died on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2014, at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital. The cause was pneumonia.

Born on Sept. 21, 1928, in Leggett, Texas, to the late Sudie and Charlie Jones, she attended Leggett schools and graduated with a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Education from Sam Houston State Teacher's College in Huntsville, Texas. After teaching several primary grades, Jenarie went on to serve as elementary coordinator, and later, director of elementary education for the Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District in Baytown, Texas. Her first major task as elementary coordinator was the implementation of Baytown's first kindergarten program. She was especially proud of this accomplishment and always felt a special bond with her kindergarten teachers. Her selection, in 1983, as "Educator of the Year" by her fellow administrators in District 4 of the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association was another highlight. A bit of a ham, this dignified lady relished impersonating Dolly Parton for "Laughter Therapy" presentations. Jenarie touched the lives of innumerable students, colleagues and friends with her uncommon blend of elegance, humor, compassion and selflessness. These qualities ensured that she was loved and respected throughout her career. Jenarie was a true optimist and a believer in the power of positive thinking as she applied and maintained a positive attitude toward all her endeavors and to everyone she met. She truly realized all her talents during her lifetime while continually working to improve the lives of those around her. "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.” Norman Vincent Peale. After her retirement in 1986, she and her husband moved back to Leggett and built the house they had been dreaming of for years. "I'm not a sit-down person," she once said, so it wasn't really a surprise when she chose to share her wisdom and experience as a "master teacher" by returning to work, part time, as a teacher appraiser for various East Texas schools. After the death of her husband, she moved to Nacogdoches where she continued to inspire and touch the lives of new friends and colleagues. During her later years, she remained highly active, and maintained her independence through her various contributions and involvement in the community. Jenarie held leadership positions and was active in many organizations, including Delta Kappa Gamma, American Association of University Women, Texas Retired Teachers Association and the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. Since giving her life to Christ as a young woman, she was enthusiastically involved in every church she belonged to. Wooster Baptist Church in Baytown; Leggett Baptist Church in Leggett; Harvest Point; and Bethel Baptist Church in Nacogdoches, among them. Jenarie will be remembered by many of her church family for her beautiful singing voice, which she employed every Sunday to exalt her Savior. She taught a Sunday school class for many years, most recently the Victory Class at Bethel Baptist Church. Jenarie loved to travel and to entertain, and travelled extensively throughout the United States, Europe and the Holy Land. Jenarie was loved by many and will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her daughter, Christina and husband, Mike Center, of Nacogdoches; her son, Jon Alexander of Leggett; her grandsons, Stephen Center, Patrick Center and wife, Regan, Christopher Center, Matthew Center and wife, Lori, all of Nacogdoches, Clinton Alexander and wife, Maha, and Jonathan Alexander and wife, Julie, all of Leggett; her great-grandsons, Ashton Center and Evan Center, both of Nacogdoches, and Jackson Alexander and Ethan Alexander, both of Leggett; and her brother, C.T. Jones of Livingston.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, E.E. "Stiney" Alexander; her son, Jack Alexander; and her great-granddaughter, Merritt Elizabeth Alexander.
