Carlos Smith Noelle was born Carlos Alexander Smith in Santa Barbara, California. The second child of Alejandro Smith and Elsie Double (married in Santa Barbara 27 September 1902). Carl was the grandson of a Californio, Pilar Ortega Smith (a direct descendant of the "Path Finder" José Francisco Ortega who arrived in San Francisco [Yerba Buena] in 1769 with the Portola Expedition). His mother was a French/Basque woman from Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico who arrived in California after 1880.

1910 - Census (head) Elsie Smith F 30y Mexico, (D) Carmen Smith F 7y California (S) Carlos Smith M 6y California (D) Estella Smith F 3y California (mother) Sarah Double F 60y Mexico (sister) Carmen Malacara F 36y Mexico (nephew) Louis Martinez M 20y California Mamie Vives F 40y France

Carl is listed on the 1910 census in Los Angeles California with his Mother, his sisters, his maternal grandmother, his aunt, a cousin and a house keeper. The household spoke French, Spanish and English.

Carl's father, Alex Smith is listed as living with his sister, Francisca Smith Fulton Tercis and her family in San Luis Obispo 15 April 1910. Carl's brother Richard was born 30 June 1910 so the separation of Elsie and Alex must have been sometime between (October 1909 but before 15 April 1910)

1920 - Census (head) Elsie D Smith F 41y Mexico (S) Carl Smith M 16y California (S) Richard Smith M 9y California. I know Carl's sister Carmen was in Mexico at the conservatory studying music and living with her aunt as it states on her passport. I have no idea where Stella was at this time, perhaps with her sister?

Stella wasn’t with her father as he was living with his sister Augustias Smith Walker and her family in Santa Barbara in 1920.

From 1920-1925 Carl has several jobs. In the 1920 he working in a warehouse for props for the movie's later he is working with his step father at the Villa Art Gallery on the Plaza in LA. He is also working on one of the ranches that the movie studios use for filming “Cowboy and Indian” films with his Step-Uncle Hernando Gonzallo Villa. Elsie is a dress maker and I belive she makes costumes for movies.

1926 - On the 17 May 1926 Carl married Dorothee Hansen [Noelle Dolen Peterson] in Santa Ana Orange County California.

1928 - On 27 March 1928 in San Diego California, Carl and Dorothee got divorced.

1930 - Census states Carl is a salesman and is divorced.

1930 - Family Bible from Lilian Harris Greer says Eleanor Elbert Greer (Stage Name Gloria Greer) marries Carl Noelle July 19th 1930 in Mexico. I found record in US below.

1931 - On 28 January 1931 in Santa Ana California, Carl married Elbert Gloria Greer, an actress and singer. Shortly after the marriage the couple moved to Ashland, Jackson, Oregon to live with Gloria’s mother Lillian Harris Greer, where he took a job at The Ashland Tidings Newspaper owned by the family. In May, Gloria hemorrhages and gives birth to a son (my father) 10 days later she dies of an infection in the hospital.

1932 - Carl is working for his brother in law Harvey Russell Ling Sr on the Burbank Review News Paper. Harvey Russell Ling and Vivian Greer adopt Carlos Elbert Noelle and he becomes Carlos Noelle Ling.

The Smith Noelle name is confusing. When Captain Jean Noelle landed in Santa Barbara he changed his name to John Frances Smith / Juan Francisco Smith. He married Maria del Pilar Ortega as John Smith and she became a Smith [Santa Barbara Presidio Huntington database marriage record number 00215]. Alejandro their son was a Smith and his son Carlos was born a Smith. When Carlos became of age he changed his name from Carlos Alexander Smith to Carl Smith Noelle (he took back the family name so-to-speak)
