Augustus was the youngest child of John and Elizabeth (Britton) Groom. His mother died in July 1833 when he was just three months old. At the age of seven he went to live with his maternal uncle and paternal aunt, Hosea and Tamson (Groom) Britton. At the age of sixteen, he was a school teacher. Augustas married Susannah Cole in Shelby Co. on April 21, 1854. She was the daughter of Joshua Cole. They began their life on the Norwich Township farm which he inherited from his uncle. It consisted of 100 acres, to which he subsequently added 80 acres. To this union seven children were born; Rhoda (McNaughton), Rosaline (Dobyns), Rilla (McCann), Sherman, Fletcher, Edward W., and Mattie (Wolfe).

Augustas was a prominent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Hilliard and served as a trustee of the parsonage. He served as township assessor for one term. He became a member of the board of education at the age of 22 and served almost continuously for the rest of his life. He was a highly esteemed resident of Franklin Co., Ohio.
